Perspective Shift: Digital Art.

Several years ago I was a firm believer that visual art, outside of film, had to be created by physical elements on physical mediums. This stance doubled down as NFTs gained popularity. I saw digitally created works as a product for business. I knew there was skill in the creating process on applications like Photoshop, InDesign, and Procreate but I didn’t feel like the end results were art.

My definition of art is something that communicates directly to my being. It wasn’t until I took a step back to reframe my appreciation for the way logos looked and how posters were designed that I started to realize that I was feeling the same way as I did looking at a painting. The way my mind processes the composition of a magazine cover is the same way I dive into a sculpture.

Then I learned about typography.

That pushed me fully into the camp of appreciating and understanding I no longer felt the same way about digital art as I once did. The psychology in choosing the right type face for a situation is deeply fascinating. In my shift of perspective and understanding of digital applications as a new outlet form, I have become increasingly humbled by the creative process. Digital illustration, poster and merch design, and the millions of type options available to convey what I have only known how convey through physical media in the past has driven an entirely new area of creativity.

In short, utilizing technology as an additional tool to further my creative pursuits has been incredibly fun and I hope to only nurture that feeling going forward.

Thanks for reading.

As always, ‘til next time,
